Signs of a True Believer

Imagine walking into a gathering where love is the first thing you notice—where everyone embraces you like family. In today’s sermon, we delve into the essence of what it means to be a true believer, centered on a profound command from Jesus: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35, KJV). This pivotal message, delivered shortly before His crucifixion, underscores that love is not just an emotion but the defining mark of Christ’s followers.

In the context of John 13-14, Jesus shares these words with His disciples amid confusion and fear. Just before this moment, Judas had left to betray Him, and the remaining eleven were apprehensive about His impending departure. They fixated on their loss, unable to grasp the depth of His teaching. In their turmoil, Jesus encapsulated His message of unity and love: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you” (John 13:34, KJV). His command was not a call for mere tolerance but for a profound, sacrificial love that mirrors the love He showed through His impending sacrifice.

The speaker highlighted how love serves as the essential “lubrication” for spiritual growth. Without it, we risk losing our way, just as the disciples did. They were mired in discussions about who among them was the greatest, oblivious to the powerful lesson unfolding before them. Jesus exemplified true love in His actions, culminating in the ultimate act of love on the cross. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13, KJV). The glory of God was revealed not through crowns but through sacrifice.

A particularly resonant point made during the sermon was the struggle every believer faces in loving others, especially in the context of the church community. The speaker shared about recent conflicts within the Evangelical Free Church of Canada, emphasizing that our current circumstances test our commitment to love. “Loving one another is really hard work,” he stated, acknowledging our tendency to fall into arguments rather than compassion. This candid admission resonates deeply as we navigate our own relationships and communities.

In our increasingly divided world, the true sign of a Christian community rests on our ability to love—genuinely and selflessly. The complexity of loving one another, especially through disagreements, offers a unique opportunity to demonstrate God’s love. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples,” the speaker reminded us, challenging us to reflect on how our actions validate our faith in Christ amidst our trials.

As we consider these insights, let us take practical steps toward embodying this command. Spend time in prayer, asking God to grant you the grace to love those who challenge you the most. Contemplate on individuals within your community or church where reconciliation or increased understanding is needed. This is an invitation into a deeper relationship with God, one that transforms not just our hearts but the spheres of influence around us.
