July 06, 2025 – John 10.22-42 – Understanding Scripture’s Truth

Understanding Scripture’s Truth

In a world filled with fleeting truths, how do we anchor ourselves to what lasts? As believers, the answer lies not just in faith, but in recognizing the unbreakable strength of Scripture. This was a key theme in the recent sermon at Knox Church, as we explored John 10:22-42, where Jesus boldly declares, “The scriptures cannot be broken.”

The sermon begins with a prayerful acknowledgment of God’s presence and our reliance on His guidance. The speaker then emphasizes that during Jesus’ time in Jerusalem, His identity as the Messiah was met with fierce resistance. Despite His clear declarations, including the profound statement, “I and my Father are one,” the crowd was filled with hostility, even to the point of violence. The speaker cleverly quipped that Jerusalem would have been more peaceful without all the loose rocks at the temple.

Central to the discussion was Jesus’ assertion that only His true sheep — those who follow His teachings — would truly understand His message. The speaker reminds us that faith in God’s Word and responsiveness to Jesus are deeply connected: “You can’t be cold to the Bible and somehow still remain warm to Jesus.” Jesus highlighted this connection by affirming the unbreakable nature of Scripture, which points us to His identity and purpose.

Historical context plays a significant role in understanding this Scripture. The passage occurs during the Feast of Dedication —Hanukkah— a time celebrating the rededication of the temple after oppression. This historical backdrop reminds us of God’s faithfulness amidst trials, a theme that resonates deeply today.

As Jesus navigates a heated dialogue with the crowd, He invites them to believe in His miracles if they’re struggling with His claims, stating, “Don’t believe me unless I do what my Father does.” This statement reinforces the divine authenticity of His works. For Jesus’ followers, there is extraordinary security in knowing that “no one can snatch them out of my hand.” This assurance comes from the unity between Jesus and the Father, illustrating the powerful relationship defined in the doctrine of the Trinity: God in three persons, working in harmony.

The sermon encourages us to consider the significance of trusting Scripture entirely — historically, culturally, and completely. The speaker insightfully challenges us to reflect on why we might question Scripture while readily accepting cultural norms that shift like sand. He reminds us, “Expect it to challenge our current cultural wisdom.” Rather than allowing modern beliefs to dictate our understanding of God, we must let Scripture guide our perspectives.

Life applications were drawn from the understanding that a relationship with God involves embracing His authority as revealed in Scripture. The speaker asserts that if God can never contradict us, we may be following an idol of our own making, instead of the true God. He emphasizes that “the authoritative Bible is the precondition for a personal relationship with God.”

As we conclude with a call to action, the message offers practical steps for spiritual growth:

1. Reflect on the undeniable truth of Scripture in your daily life.
2. Pray for discernment as you navigate the complexities of modern culture.
3. Seek ways to allow the teachings of the Bible to shape your moral decisions and interactions with others.

In a world where many seek to find their own truth, we are invited to embrace the unbreakable scriptures of God. As we do, we slowly learn to hear the voice of our Good Shepherd calling us toward a deeper relationship with Him.
