Apr 3 2022 – Acts 28.11-31 – New Beginnings in Faith

New Beginnings in Faith

As we gather to reflect on the concluding thoughts from the book of Acts, we are reminded of the remarkable journey of faith that can turn everyday lives into extraordinary testimonies. In this final chapter, the speaker invites us to witness the powerful story of the Apostle Paul as he reaches the heart of the Roman Empire, while encouraging us to consider our own responses to the gospel message.

The speaker begins by reflecting on the work of Luke, the author of Acts, who shared the incredible events surrounding Paul’s journey. He notes, “Luke wrote more of the New Testament than any other author,” illustrating how God spoke through human events to shape a narrative that still resonates today. The narrative spans over 30 years and reveals a startling truth: the message of Jesus transformed everything, creating ripples that continue to affect our lives.

In this concluding passage, we see a mix of responses to Paul’s message. As Paul arrives in Rome, he encounters both support and skepticism from the Jewish community. The speaker quotes Paul’s experience through the lens of the ancient prophet Isaiah, noting, “You will indeed hear, but never understand; you will indeed see but never perceive” (Isaiah 6:9). This highlights a painful reality we still face: many hear the gospel but do not grasp its significance.

The speaker shares a poignant illustration about a friend who loved classical music. For him, jazz was “like tinfoil in a microwave,” showcasing how two people can experience the same information but interpret it entirely differently. This analogy serves as a gentle reminder that our understanding—or lack thereof—of the gospel can mirror such experiences.

As Paul journeyed further into his mission, he encountered a warm welcome from fellow believers, which energized him greatly. We are reminded that physical presence and community among believers often serve to uplift and support one another. “They just wanted to show physical presence and support for him. And it made a difference,” said the speaker. This solidarity brought Paul courage as he faced an uncertain future.

Paul, under house arrest in Rome, invites local Jewish leaders to discuss the shared hope they possess in the Messiah. As he testifies to the kingdom of God from the scriptures, he encourages them to find beauty in the message of Jesus. Yet, as expected, reactions are mixed.

The speaker urges us to understand that, “some will have ears to hear and others will hear without understanding.” Acknowledging the challenges of communication in faith encounters, we are called to not lose heart for those we love who seem unresponsive.

The journey of faith detailed in Acts parallels our own. The message encourages us to continue sharing the love and truth of Christ boldly and humbly, even when a mixed response is expected. “God has ways of leveraging ears open and leveraging eyes,” reminds the speaker, instilling hope for those we pray for in our lives.

In our daily lives, let us reflect on our connection to those around us who may not yet understand the beauty of the gospel. Are there moments where we can offer support, a listening ear, or even simply our presence to those who are seeking?

As we conclude this reflection, we invite you to join us at Knox Church in Old Strathcona, just north of Whyte Avenue in Edmonton. Together, let us explore the depth of God’s word and embrace the community that uplifts us in faith. For more opportunities to connect, check the Knox Event Calendar to find engaging events where we can grow together in fellowship. Your journey toward understanding and living out your faith is not one you need to take alone.
