Knox Church Restoration Fund

Our church runs a weekly ping pong gathering for new immigrants, and one of my favourite things to do is to give new players a tour of our building. They are quite fascinated by the labyrinth of hallways in the sometimes spooky basement, the huge old (and functioning!) gas stove in the kitchen, the nursery with its built in “baby bunk beds” that has held generations of wee Edmontonians, and the gymnasium that enables them to play their favourite sport. Inevitably, the most oohs and aahs come when the visitors walk into the beautiful old sanctuary with its wooden pews, large windows and majestic pipe organ. While these immigrants may have come from countries with ancient ruins, in Edmonton Knox Church is often the first old building they have encountered, and its historical spirit is not lost on them.

Knox Church was built in 1907 and is a recognized historic resource – a full history is found in the Alberta Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately, old buildings like Knox Church require more than admiration, and our church needs major work to keep it fit for use and safe for the public. We are currently working to raise $600,000. These funds will go toward restoring the brickwork, fixing the windows, roofs and eavestroughs, painting and plastering the sanctuary, and making the building wheelchair accessible.

If you would like to help us meet our fundraising goal, please consider attending one of our fundraising events, or making a direct donation. Thank you for your support!
